The Technical Corner
Saturday morning, one week before the show, I polished the '61 and proceeded to start it for a drive. No sooner did the engine start than it revved into an unacceptably high RPM range. That awful sound of metal against metal before oil had a chance to do its job. In a split second, I said a few choice words and manually pulled the gas pedal back from the floor bringing the engine to proper idle speed. What was it? Pedal linkage:? Carburetor?

I called Russ Stripay about the show and mentioned my problem which Russ correctly

and quickly diagnosed as a return spring which, on my car, is attached to hole by the power steering unit with the other end attached to the carburetor. Sure 'nuff, when I looked, I found a broken spring that was new when JFK was president.

At Hi-Lo Auto I picked up a replacement for $2.48 including tax. I bent one end with needle nose pliers, and the other with standard pliers, attached the ends, and in a matter of minutes I was on the road again.

It was an inconvenience but considering the alternative, I got off lightly. I urge all who own carburetored cars to check this spring and to replace it if it looks even slightly old. $2.48 can't buy better piece of mind. Thanks, Russ!

The Quiz Answered
Once again there were no winners of last month's quiz—a U.S. president gave a former head of state a Cadillac. What was the year, model and who were the players?

In May of 1972, the days of shuttle diplomacy and rapprochement (remember that word?) the long arm of Richard Nixon reached out to Clark ST. He gave Cadillac three days to ready a car to be given as a gift from the U.S. to Leonid Brezhnev, leader of the Soviet Union. According to the Cadillac LaSalle Reference by Walter McCall, "a suitable body was found on a receiving dock —a sable black Eldorado coupe with red pin striping—and literally walked down the assembly line. Upon completion, it was tested on Detroit freeways. Manuals, spare parts and a selection of 8-track tapes were placed in the car. It was then loaded on a military transport at Selfridge AFB for the long journey overseas."
